This movie, apparently you seem to have misunderstood a major deal - the scientists are not aware that they are creating a new timeline, they think they are only creating an 8 minute long reality; because the machine is nowhere powerful enough to ever do that and/or was not designed for that purpose. The whole point is the incredible powers of the human mind, the real culprit and cause for travel through space/time. This power of the mind also causes him to stay in the alternate reality, taking over Fentress' body.
